Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and II are a family of peptides that help to mediate the growth-promoting effects of GH on cartilage. These peptides circulate in seurm bound to specific carrier proteins (IGF binding proteins, IGFBPs). Altered
serum
IGFs and IGFBPs in chronic renal failure have been described. We measured serum IGF-I by radioimmnoassay (RIA). IGF-I was seperated from IGFBPs by Sephadex G-50 acid chromatography. IGF-I levels were 70.9¡¾15.1ng/ml (mean¡¾SF) in acute renal
failure
(ARVF), 175.8¡¾33.9ng/ml in chronic renal faiiure (CRF), and 106.9¡¾15.6ng/ml in end stage renal disease (ESRD), while IGF-I level in control subjects was 175.8¡¾8.5ng/ml. To elaluate IGFBPs patern in uremia, we did Western Ligand Bloot (WLB).
The
significant decrease of serum IGFBP3 was observed in patients with ARF and ESRD. Hovever, we couldn't find any significant change of IGFBPs in chronic renal failure.
The decreased level of serum IGF-I and alteration of IGFBPs in ARF and ESRD may influenced the availability of IGF-I in kindney, and may play a role in the pathogenesis or progression of renal failure.
